Pittsburgh Penguins Classics: Mike Lang’s Top 10 Greatest Lines Source: Bleacher Report
Mike Lang is the voice of the Pittsburgh Penguins . While he used to grace loyal watchers with his call of televised games, today sees Lang’s famous voice calling the action on local radio. Whether being heard on the boom box or “boob tube,” his is the official larynx of Steel City hockey! For generations of fans, his one-liners and eccentricities in key moments have served like an intravenous dose of caffeine to accompany that already automatic surge of adrenaline that accompanies great play on the ice. In the ‘Burgh, Mike Lang stands beside Myron Cope as, quite simply, “the man.” As if any real “Picksburgher” needs to be told, the loss of Cope provides a key lesson as it concerns today’s hockey broadcasts. Appreciate what you have while you have it! How can Lang not be appreciated? Through Stanley Cup campaigns and threats of leaving town, his excited, raspy call of the action has a full body of character. Yet, even his unique tone can’t compete with the greatest element in his repertoire: all of those colorful sayings! Crack open an Iron City beer, turn on the radio telecast and rewind the DVR a few seconds to sync with the hockey game (if, of course, “it’s a hockey night in Pittsburgh!”), and take a nostalgic skate with me as we count down the 10 most classic sayings of Mike Lang’s illustrious career. … Go here to read the rest

GMs to look at the 1-3-1, realignment Source: The Pensblog
Sometime today on this London-esque Tuesday, the NHL GMs will meet in Toronto for their first meeting of the season. One of the bigger topics of conversation will be Tampa Bay's 1-3-1 system that the Flyers exposed as a joke last week. But, really, it's all talk, because there's nothing anyone can do about it. It's like The Trap all over again. The only reason The Trap became a popular thing in the late '90s was because as the league got bigger, more expansion teams had to fill their roster with so-so talent. And the only way for that so-so talent to compete with established teams was to bend the rules, seeing what they could and could not get away with. That line of thinking starts taking you down the road of clutch-and-grab, and it's no coincidence that The Trap and clutch-and-grab went hand in hand. Anyway, here's what Ray Shero has to say about the 1-3-1: “It'll be interesting,” Penguins GM Ray Shero told NHL.com . … Link

Paul Martin is -11 Source: The Pensblog
Apparently not all PG articles are on that PG+ website. Shelly Anderson busted out a piece today about Paul Martin being a -11, which is actually 4th-worst in the entire NHL. Ouch. There's no way around this stat. There's no way to nitpick through a gamelog and find evidence to support the notion that Paul Martin has simply been a victim of bad luck. He was -5 in 10 games with Michalek , and he's been a -6 in 7 games without Michalek . If Paul Martin was a -3, no one would be talking about it. But being in the double digits on the minus side is just too glaring of a stat. There's really nothing else to say. Does his -11 rating mean he's the worst defenseman in the NHL? No. … Go here to read the rest

Don’t know much about geography Source: The Pensblog
Over the weekend, the Internet exploded as word started to spread about an NHL realignment plan that is “gaining steam.” Here's what the divisions would look like: Some tidbits about the schedule: -Teams would play home-and-homes with teams outside their division, with the remaining being played within the division. No clue how the numbers break down on this, but it seems like 5 games a year against divisional opponents sounds about right. With those home-and-homes, teams would play either 44 or 46 games against non-divisional teams. That leaves basically half the schedule open to divisional games. Compare that to the 24 divisional games the Pens see every year in the current alignment. -The playoff seeding will return to how it was in the old days (before 1993-94), with the top 4 teams in each division seeded 1 to 4 and pairing down on a collision course with the other division in the Conference Finals. There is some dust being kicked up about this new playoff format, as teams in 8-team divisions feel like it's unfair. It'll be unfair in years that everyone is good. It'll be fair in the years when you get to pound on one extra team every year. Moot point … Go here to read the rest

CASE STUDY: Lovejoy vs. Engelland Source: The Pensblog
Ben Lovejoy vs. Deryk Engelland . Now that the blue-line corps is healthy and not in Shanny's Corner, Dan Bylsma is being forced to make his hardest decision on the early season. He's obviously going to flip-flop these two guys on a game-by-game basis this early in the season, but it doesn't have to be that way. One guy should get the nod, while the other waits for the former to commit a turnover that costs the Pens a game and then take his place. Niskanen isn't in this discussion because he has no business being in the discussion. We were gonna do some kind of mock trial-and-jury for this debate, except Internet bylaws state you can only parody A Few Good Men three times before you have to retire from the World Wide Web. Instead, we're just gonna lay out our case for both Ben Lovejoy and Deryk Engelland . There's a poll at the end of this post, and we'll also be having a one-hour radio show tonight dedicated solely to this Lovejoy vs. Engelland debate. Crosby will probably announce his comeback game or something, and it will derail our plans. But as for now, 8: 00pm to 9: 00pm on our radio station. All Lovejoy/ Engelland , all the time. Check back here around 7:30 or so for all the details on the show … Link

How are the Penguins playing .700 hockey thus far minus most of their star players? Source: Post Gazette
It’s not so much that the Penguins are tied for first place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Atlantic Division, as it is most years, looks to be hotly contested during the 2011-2012 season. The Penguins are looking to maintain success, despite the unavailability of their star players. The Rangers seem primed for a playoff run while the Flyers have retooled their roster to get younger and hungrier. The Islanders are out to prove that they are finally ready to compete for the division crown and the Devils are desperate to prove that last season’s failure to qualify for the postseason was merely a fluke.
