Pens VS Caps And More!

Going into yesterday’s game against the Caps without our Russian Rocket boys was sure to be a big disaster of Chernobyl proportions. Caps were hungry and were ready to check out early in the third.

However, JStaal thought otherwise giving Pens an extra point late in the third. Flower was morning-glory-solid-hard despite the outcome of the shootout. Was great to see Talbot pick up a goal, i guess that training video is finally paying off. BillyG picked up his 19th goal of the season on PP. Pens played good enough game to make Ovie sad who said after the game, “I think he [Theodore] saved us most of the time this game.  I think we didn’t play our game at all. Jose keeps us in the game and it’s nice when we can win when we don’t play well.” Orpik who put a cannon ball on Talbot’s stick was frustrated without a “W”. I must admit Pens haven’t been winning much lately but taking Caps who are leading East Conference to overtime and shootout without Malkin and Gonchar still feels really good. Getting Alex Ovechkin to admit his team wasn’t as hot against the Pens this game … priceless!

Two week blur of Hockey and Beer.

It’s all over.

It seems like forever since the Olympics began just two weeks ago, and yet the experience has flown by at the same time.

Tensions have been high between pens fans lately as our countries battled it out against one another and many are glad it’s over. But, with a disappointing finish for Russia, I think it’s safe to say that there will be some pressure from NHL players on Bettman to allow them to compete again in 2014.

Canada Beats Russia And What It Might Mean For Penguins

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Number of View: 303

It was hard to decide on the subject of this post. I felt compelled to name it “Russia Falls To Canada …” since Russians really didn’t put up too much of a fight yesterday aside from their “Eurotrash” incident. It seemed that the whole game for Russians was lost in the first period. Russian coach Vyacheslav Bykov blamed himself for the loss and thanked the players for trying and giving their best. However, Russia’s best was not enough to beat Canada but no matter how you look at it if you are Penguins fan yesterdays game was a win/win situation. We had Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar on one side and Sidney Crosby and Mark-Andre Fleury on another.

Although i was cheering for Russia last night i really hoped they wouldn’t win gold. A few days back i shared my point of view with MouthFullOfTang and today i will share it with you. So why if i was cheering for Russia i wished them no gold? Well, as a wise man once said … “I did it for the Pens!”

So lets start from the bottom to top … first off is Marc-Andre Fleury. Not much can be said about him and i am just glad that his chances of getting injured during Olympics have almost been reduced to 0%. He is just happy to be in Vancouver and i am happy for him. He should be all refreshed and ready to rock on March 2nd.

Next on the plate is Sergei Gonchar … well he is a veteran he has done it all. He hasn’t seen gold Olympic medal yet but for some reason Sarge doesn’t strike me as a type of guy who will mourn and cry about it. He will brush it off his shoulder and come back ready to rock’n'roll for the Pens.

Evgeni Malkin on the other hand was hungry for gold he wanted that bling more than anything else. Instead he is leaving Vancouver completely empty handed, no taste of silver, or even bronze. Geno is a type of player who plays with his heart and right now his heart has a big hole. He will come back to Pittsburgh hungry for the taste of victory. He will hold no quarter, there will be no mercy and no remorse. So in a long run i think Geno not getting a medal is a good thing for Pens.

Unlike Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby needs to win the gold for this to be good for Pens. Sid is a type of player who likes structure and organization. He gets knocked off his rhythm when things don’t go according to the plan. So far Sid hasn’t seen too many deviations from his plan … Art Ross Trophy – check, Heart Memorial Trophy – check, Lester B. Pearson Award – check, Stanley Cup – check, throw some other stuff in there – check, check, check … and now Olympic Gold Medal. The only thing that could stand in between Sid and Gold would probably be Brooks Orpik and Team USA. However, in reality after beating Russia 7:3 team Canada became an express freight train that will be almost impossible for anyone to stop. Sid should come back from Olympics feeling more accomplished and continue his NHL domination with the Pens.

Of course as i mentioned Brooks Orpik and he is, well, he is just Brooks Orpik. Umm … Yeah. Ok. He already got his reward from the Olympics by getting his Wiki profile updated by @EverGreenT who provided Orpiks Olympic Profile as a reference for the Free Candy nickname! Great job and a huge accomplishment!

Of course the best thing about Russia losing is Ovechkin … hahahahahahahahahahaha! Thats all i have for now!

Olympic Hockey Team Russia Practice

Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar flew in together to Vancouver. Geno denied rumors of a bumpy-adventure-filled ride which included emergency landing 200 kilometers away from the city. In his interview Geno said that he is hoping that his old number 11 will bring him good luck. He said he started out playing under that number when he was little in Magnitogorsk. When he made the master team he changed it to 71. However, his line mate Ilya Kovalchuk is wearing his number 71 so Geno decided to revert back to his old number. Besides Kovalchuk his other line mate will be Maxim Afinogenov.

When Geno was asked about Sidney Crosby he said that they are very good friends. They have been team mates for 4 years now and won Stanley Cup together. They have much respect for each other. However, if he gets a chance to check Crosby during Olympics he said he will do it and maybe even more than once.

Pavel Lysenkov took and posted some awesome pictures from yesterday’s practice on his blog. I also found awesome video of Geno on his blog if you want to know the story behind the video read here.

Below are the pictures he took. Enjoy! Here are some more links to awesome Vancouver related pics Pavel took and posted on his blog [1], [2], [3], [4] … you’d be doing yourself a huge disservice if you didn’t check out these pictures.

Dan Bylsma Cheering For Team USA

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

In his interview yesterday Dan Bylsma when asked who he is going to cheer for in olympics he said:

“I am going to root for Brooks Orpik. I am a USA guy. I will always be cheering for Team USA in this situation. I think if it is Canada-Russia in a game I would be like Jordan Staal’s mom in a Carolina-Pittsburgh game – you are going to be cheering for both guys to do well and you are going to want both guys to do well. You are not picking sides. It will be interesting. It will be interesting to see them compete against each other. Having brothers and competing against friends in different situations going from Los Angeles to Anaheim, it makes it more intriguing. When a play a guy I know well and consider a good friend I want to get a better piece of him than if I did know him. It makes for interesting fodder and watching but I will go with Brooks Orpik every time.”

Pens are playing the Isles tonight on home ice at 7:30 pm. I am looking forward for this guy below to step up his game and score some goals. Thanks to MouthFullOfTang for the pic find.

Last time Pens faced Isles Geno came out with his 5th career hat trick and put an end to his slump debate.

Talbot will not be playing tonight so we are expecting another WBS Penguins recall. Mark Letestu is expected to join Pens in tonights game.

I will be rooting for Sergei Gonchar to score his 200th career goal.

The 2011 All-Star Game is tentatively scheduled to be hosted by the Phoenix Coyotes in Glendale, Ariz. However, should they be relocated Penguins made a bid for Next Year’s All-Star Weekend.

Apparently, Crosby-Talbot Advertisement Voted Best (see all commercials). Sorry Mike Green, Ovie, Mike Richards, and the caveman, ops i already mentioned Ovie.

Sidney Crosby is on the cover of the Canadian edition of Sports Illustrated. Its just so happens that i am stuck in Toronto and I have an extra copy and will give it away to anyone who did not read this sentence. Email with your proof/reasoning to enter the contest info@penshead.com.

And finally some exciting news in the world of hockey. Thanks to Peter V for bringing this to my attention. There is a new expansion team! Adult film legend Peter North’s official hockey team “The Peter North Stars”! Check out their jersey and grab one on ebay right now! They are going fast!
