Favorite Hockey Movies

Now, i don’t watch TV since i am fed up with all the stupid commercials trying to make you think you need to buy their stuff because it will improve your quality of life. Let me be the first one to tell you, it won’t! Now just because i don’t watch TV don’t assume i don’t like any form of entertainment. I love movies. Who doesn’t? I love them so much that i download them on constant basis and watch them for free. Don’t blame me you’d do it as well if you knew how. Anyhow, recently i came across a few hockey movies and i thought i’d share some of my favorites with you, the reader.

First place takes the movie called The Rocket about French Canadian player Maurice Richard who played for Montreal Canadiens. Now this movie was kind of an oxymoron for me. I watched the version which had both French and English languages mixed up into it. Since the movie is about struggles of discrimination that French Canadian players faced in NHL, having to read subtitles for the French parts of the movie just made me hate them that much more. However, the movie makes up for this during scenes where Sean Avery gets punched in the face repeatedly, thats more than once. If there is one hockey movie worth paying for this would be it.

Second place goes to Youngblood. I like this movie for the simple fact that it promotes the idea that hockey players get laid a lot. I mean look at Crosberry, that guy crushes mad pussy all the time. This movie gets thumbs down for showing Rob Lowe parading around in nothing but his jockstrap. However, it does make up for it with the scenes when Youngblood porks Mrs. Robinson, who was still a little engine that could, and then skillfully switches his game over to the coaches daughter. Do yourself a favor and do not look up recent pictures of Miss McGill who was played by Fionnula Flanagan … you will be deeply disappointed and your boner is going to hate you. I wouldn’t recommend spending money on this movie but worth the few clicks to download and check out Patrick Swayze get flattened on the ice. On top of that Keanu Reeves is in this movie with like 1 line. Amazing!

All time favorite is the Slap Shot takes the third place. This movie is filled with hard hits, bench clearing and all time classic wisdom of life. Best part of the movie is by far the Hanson Brothers. There are also part with a pair of perky nipples. Its a win/win situation to watch this classic movie. Go download it right now and stop slacking.

If you have favorite hockey movies post them in the comments. Do not say Tooth Fairy or Mighty Ducks I, II, or III because i am going to hurt you physically.

Pens vs Caps tonight! Amma be at Foley’s tonight … come say hello!

Belarus 5 – Germany 3 & Andrei Kostitsyn Coming Back

Sunday, February 21st, 2010
Number of View: 442

Watching first Belarus hockey game against Finland was somewhat painful and disappointing. Belarus was unable to stop Finland from scoring and failed to create anything significant offensively, registering only 1 goal and a disappointing total of 12 shots.  It seemed as though Belarus has lost all hope for making a statement during these Winter Olympic games. Belarus struggled with filling up its roster spots after injuries took out such key players as Andrei Kostitsyn who plays for Montreal Canadiens along side his brother Sergei Kostitsyn. However, Belorussian boys awoke sometime during the 3rd period of the second preliminary game when they faced Sweden. Dmitri Meleshko scored with less than 10 min left in the third period making the gap in goals to a minimum and total score of 3-2, Sweden. Just moments later Belarus kept the pressure up and rang one off the post, making Sweden take an unpleasant trip down memory lane back to 2002. It seems as though the game was taking place in Belarus as the crowed exploded with “Belarus!” chant. Belarus didn’t win that game as Daniel Alfredsson scored for Sweden during final seconds of the game making final score 4-2. However, it seemed like the first time Belarus team finally believed that they could actually compete on Olympic level even with incomplete roster.

Belorussian boys came back on ice yesterday to dominate Germany with final score 5-3 giving Belarus some light at the end of the dark tunnel. After the game Sergei Kostitsyn with a goal and 3 assists became a leader in points for the time being increasing his total to 5 points. Currently tied with Evgeni Malking after Russians lead Group B upsetting Czech republic in a 4-2 win. Aleksei Kalyuzhny scored two goals, Aleksei Ugarov and Ruslan Salei, who currently plays for Colorado Avalanche, both had a goal. Konstantin Koltsov, an ex-Penguin, registered two assists. See Belarus vs Germany highlights here.

However, there are some positive news for Belarus in the near future. Belorussian power forward Andrei Kostitsyn is allowed to return after the injury and play for his county. Andrei  could be back wearing Belarus jersey as soon as February 23rd. Here is what Shawn P. Roarke of NHL.com reports:

Montreal forward Andrei Kostitsyn is being allowed to play for Belarus in the Olympics.

Many thought the Olympics were over for Andrei Kostitsyn when he injured his knee on Dec. 31 and had to undergo surgery. But, his rehabilitation is ahead of schedule and, although he has yet to play a game, he has been skating for the past week.

That is enough to convince new Montreal GM Pierre Gauthier to release Andre Kostitsyn to the Belarusian national team, where he will join his brother, Montreal’s Sergei Kostitsyn.

“He knows that he has to follow the protocol established by (team physician David) Mulder, but, if everyone goes according to schedule, he could be playing by Feb. 23 or 24,” Gauthier told Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette.

If that date holds, Andrei Kostitsyn would be available to play after pool play concludes on Feb. 21. The qualification round takes place on Feb. 23 and the quarterfinals are the next day.

Gauthier said part of the reason he is letting his injured player go is that he will be able to continue his rehab with the Belarusians. If Andrei Kostitsyn stayed with the Canadiens, he would not be able to take the ice for a week because of the NHL freeze that takes place after Sunday’s games.

Thanks to Liana B for this photo featuring old Belorussian national emblem.

Belarus so far with 2 medals, silver and bronze, both taken by Belorussian athletes in biathlon.

This Is For All The Ladies. (Exclusive Interview)

This is a tribute to the women of hockey. The ones who shaped the sport, the ones who adore the sport and the ones who live the sport.

The sports industry is, in many ways, a patriarchal and patrilineal system. Reflect on your own introduction to hockey. Most of us have that “tomboy” quality to us. I remember being 4 years old and wanting a back hoe digger for Christmas.. We relate to our Fathers, Grandfathers, Uncles and Brothers. Whether you spent your time watching your dad play at the rink or used to sit down with your grandpa for the Saturday afternoon game, the vast majority of women identify their love of hockey through the predominant male figures in their lives.

Along the way we seem to have lost some sense of identity as being women of the sport.

It’s time to take back what hockey means to us as females and recognise some of the kick ass chicks in this epic game.

We need to be empowered female fans and hockey players. To celebrate our worth and important contributions to the hockey community. To reject stereotypes, break down constraining typecasts and flaunt our love for the greatest game in the world. To allow ourselves to feel proud and comfortable in our own oestrogen laden skin.

Wayne Gretzky Is Playing For Team Belarus In Vancouver 2010 Olympics

Friday, February 5th, 2010
Number of View: 1800

Well, maybe The Great One is not playing for team Belarus these Olympic games. However, there were some hints that he should from Belorussian readers of “Komsomolskaya Pravda” (KP) newspaper. KP broke the story of Wayne reuniting with some of his relatives in Belarus during his visit to KHL All Star game which was held in Minsk on January 30th. Here is a link to KP’s story, yes its in Russian, and no I am not going to translate it for you!

I know this is unrelated to Penguins but being that i was born in Minsk, Belarus this story is just too epic for me not to write about. Like i said i am not going to translate KP’s article instead i am going to translate this article on the same story which contains full interview with Wayne. Are you ready? Enjoy …

Great Canadian hockey player reunited with some of his Belorussian relatives in Minsk.

There lived  a Belarus Terentiy Lavrentievich Gretzky. It wasn’t a sweet life for him in the Russian Empire, and sometime in the beginning  of the 20th century he decided to test out his luck overseas leaving war and ruins behind him. With his wife Anna and son Zinoviy, Terentiy headed to to Canada. It seems that quality of life really improved for the family from Belorussian Podlese, since 4 more kids were born – Fedor, Vasiliy, Ekaterina, and Olga. As “Komsomolskaya Pravda in Belarus” reporting that family story is not fully known about what happened in Canada, however Anna and the kids sometime around 1930′s returned to their Belorussian village, which was located close to Polish border. It seems that Terentiy soon should have follow his wife, however that never happened. Anna couldn’t reestablish her new life without her husband and wanted to return overseas, however that also didn’t work out.

Terentiy without waiting for his Anna, got remarried to a Polish girl. They had kids. A son, Walter was born. Walter had a son of his own – Wayne. Wayne became a great sportsman – Pele of hockey.

When Belorussian branch of Gretzky family tree once again heard the name Wayne Gretzky, they decided to find out if he is related to them. Galina Soldatenkova – granddaughter of Terentiy from Belorussian city named Svisloch, remembered that her father Zinoviy for a long time exchanged letters with his father, who sent him pictures from America. He also wrote about Wayne, and called him by a Russian name Vanya.

There came a letter from America from Albert Gretzky – uncle of Wayne. Everyone was sure that they are related. However, nothing more than a few more letters came out of it. This story in general terms was told to us by Galina Soldatenkova. Turns out they have the same grandfather in common.

When Wayne came to Belarus, Canadian hockey player found out about his existing Belorussian relatives, after which he called his father Walter in Canada.

- Dad said that he is coming to Belarus this summer, to meet with the relatives, – said Wayne the next day.

After dusk Belorussian relatives of Wayne Gretzky arrived in Minsk, and after KHL All Star game which took place at “Minsk-Arena” met with Canadian hockey player in hotel called “Europe”.

Wayne gave all the kids Belorussian candies

Despite busy schedule of meetings, Wayne found the time to meet with Galina Soldatenkova. He returned from All Star game, slept for hour and a half and decided to dedicate 30 minutes for the meeting.

He came down the hall at exactly 8pm. Well dressed – blue jacket, brown kashmir scarf with matching boots, and snow-white dress shirt.

- Its really him. He looks similar – whispering Belorussian relatives. It seems like they might still think that the star won’t come over.

However, Wayne scanning with his eyes trying to find the translator, together they headed right for our company. Orders a beer from the bar. He greets everyone.

- Brother, over here, – Galina inviting him to join her on the couch.

- How are we related? – right away asks Wayne. It seems like he is still startled by the sudden discovery of his relatives.

- It so happens that our grandfather Terenity…

- Ok! So he is also your grandfather? - Wayne asks finally realizing the relative ties.

- Together Terentiy and his brother Lukyanov were in America, – continues Galina.

- Oh Louie! – says Wayne finding the American version of the name.

- He has three kids … – says Galina

- … and they live in Chicago, – continues Wayne. - Grandpa and his brother first traveled to Chicago. Then grandpa left for Canada … My father really wants to come here this summer, visit these places.

- We are very happy, – Galina starts to show photos of kids of Terentiy, who live in Belarus, that are half brother and half sister of Wayne’s father.

- Uncle Fedor is still alive? - asks Wayne.

- Fedor and Ekaterina both still alive. She is 84. Fedor is soon turning 80.

- I don’t even think my father knows this … – says Wayne.

- Really? Maybe he doesn’t, – Galina continues to show photos. – This is my father and grandma in America.

- So this lady was married to my grandpa? - asks Wayne with surprised tone.

- Yes. That’s his first wife.

- How do you write Gretzky in your language? - asks Wayne.

Translator spells out the last name. ( Грецкий )

- Oh, this photo was in the newspaper? - asks Wayne seeing familiar photo.

- Yes, yes. Unfortunately, not many photos are left since our house burned down. All letters from America burned down as well…

- Ohh!!! Where are you living now? – asks Wayne.

- In Svisloch. Its located in western part of Belarus. 300 kilometers away from Minsk. Right next to Poland.

- Ohh yeah? My grandmother was from Poland, from Warsaw. They were married in Canada.

- We had a picture of their marriage. Do you still have photos of our grandfather?

- I have them at home. Give me your address and my father will send them to you.

- Please send us more pictures of all of your relatives.

- Of course! Be sure of that! My grandfather is a photo enthusiast.

- My father was a photo enthusiast as well! This is something they have in common.

- What’s your name? - Wayne directs the question to Galina’s grandson.

- Alexei.

- You play any sports?

- Voleyball.

- Okay. Thats very good. I am leaving tomorrow. I will give your address to my father right away. He will write you a letter, - promises Wayne. – He speaks Ukrainian. He is 72 years old. Grandpa Terentiy used to speak Belorussian. Grandma spoke Polish. They spoke Ukrainian among themselves. All the kids had Ukrainian as their first language. In 1972, during Canada vs USSR game, my mother gave TV interview and suddenly switched over to Russian and Ukrainian mixed language. Everyone was surprised. Also, my parents used to live on a farm, and their neighbor was from Belarus.

- How did life of our grandfather turn out? What did he do? – curiously asks Galina.

- Anthony (thats how he was called in Canada) was in second wold war in Canadian army. After that he was a farmer: grew potato, bred pigs, and chickens. I was close to our grandfather. Till i was 8 year old, every summer i would visit him. My father was helping on the farm for a few weeks during summer. Grandpa loved me the most. The rest of the grand kids were not too excited over that.

- It happens to have favorites, – Galina says while nodding

- When I just started playing hockey, my grandpa and grandma would come visit me during practice. When somebody would hit me during the practice my grandma would try to step up for me and hit them back!

- People say we look alike. What do you think? – asks Galina

- Well i am going to remain being Gretzky … maybe you want to take a picture? – says Wayne hinting towards ending the conversation.

Canadian smiles into the camera. Belorussian are little shy.

- Wait a moment! We have a gift for you, – exclaimed Galina taking out a box of chocolates. – Its for the kids!

This Wayne did not expect. Apparently, he might not even remember the last time when somebody gave him – a millionaire – a box of candies.

- This is from our Belovezhskiy Forest, – Galina took out a clay figure of a Belorussian-grandpa with a mustache and a bag with 4 chocolate bars.

Wayne ordered two bottles of wine from the bar and presented them to Galina.

- Silly me! Gave Wayne only 4 chocolate bars. He has 5 kids! – remembered Galina after saying goodbye to Wayne. – Its ok i also gave them a box of chocolates they can share.

The next day after return to Svislsoch, Wayne’s number of Belorussian relatives increased by one. Galina’s granddaughter was born.

Lukashenko Welcomes KHL All Star Game To Minsk, Belarus

Thursday, January 28th, 2010
Number of View: 681

KHL All Star Game takes place this Saturday January 30th in Belarus, Minsk. Alexander Lukashenko, the current president of Belarus, apparently is a big hockey fan! He even plays himself!

He is also known as the last dictator of Europe! He has been in power at least since i left Belarus in 1996. That’s 14 years, at least! He is known for controlling the media, suppressing his opposition, secret police such as KGB, and using questionable tactics to remain in power, such as abolishing the constitution’s two-term presidential limit in 2004 elections. While Belarus is in deep economic recession, Lukashenko does not limit funding to build “Ice Castles” all over Belarus, such as Minsk Arena built in 2006, which will host this years KHL All Star Game. This was always the case in USSR, while most of the country was piss poor the capital, Moscow, was dressed in gold. I guess USSR and former republics were always big on their international image.

Anyway, this years KHL game is being hosted in Minsk, Belarus. Last game took place, no where else but on the world famous Red Square, right in front of Kremlin.

Some familiar faces were on ice. One of the most notable and relevant to this blog is Jaromir Jagr. His team won 7:6 aganst team Yashin. Tretiak was present at the game pictured above. So was Marcel Hossa pictured below wearing #81, apparently younger brother of Marian Hossa.

This year everything is pretty much the same. The teams were picked out through voting. Two teams were picked out … Russian team lead by Yashin whose roster looks like this:

Team Yashin (Russian stars)

Goalkeepers: Georgy Gelashvili (Lokomotiv Yaroslavl); Andrei Mezin (Dynamo Minsk)

Defenders: Sergei Zubov (SKA St. Petersburg); Ilya Nikulin (Ak Bars Kazan); Dmitriy Kalinin (Salavat Yulaev Ufa); Anton Babchuk (Avangard Omsk); Konstantin Korneev (CSKA Moscow); Vitaly Atyushov (Metallurg Magnitogorsk)

Forwards: Alexei Yashin (SKA St. Petersburg); Alexander Radulov (Salavat Yulaev Ufa); Alexei Morozov (Ak Bars Kazan); Danis Zaripov (Ak Bars Kazan); Sergei Fedorov (Metallurg Magnitogorsk); Sergei Mozyakin (Atlant Mytischi); Alexei Tereschenko (Ak Bars Kazan); Sergei Zinoviev (Salavat Yulaev Ufa); Denis Parshin (CSKA Moscow)

Versus International team lead by Jaromir Jagr … with the following roster:

Team Jagr (International Stars)

Goalkeepers: Karri Ramo (Avangard Omsk); Michael Garnett (HC MVD)

Defenders: Kevin Dallman (Barys Astana); Sandis Ozolinsh (Dinamo Riga);Martin Strbak (HC MVD); Lasse Kukkonen (Avangard Omsk); Karel Rachunek (Dynamo Moscow); Jaroslav Obsut (Spartak Moscow)

Forwards: Jaromir Jagr (Avangard Omsk); Marcel Hossa (Dinamo Riga); Mattias Weinhandl (Dynamo Moscow); Patrick Thoresen (Salavat Yulaev Ufa); Josef Vasicek (Lokomotiv Yaroslavl); Chris Simon (Vityaz Chekhov); Jiri Hudler (Dynamo Moscow); Ville Peltonen (Dinamo Minsk); Jozef Stumpel (Barys Astana)

KHL has really out done itself this year and actually created official website available in two languages Russian and English. For more information on KHL All Star Game and more cool pictures please visit http://www.khlallstar.ru/en/

LETS GO TEAM JAGR!!!

With Olympic games just around the corner … team Belarus will be present. Wearing Red, Green and White colors. Here is a picture …

The colors come from Belarussian flag which was adopted during USSR era … here is the flag

However, this is not the original Belarussian flag, in fact when USSR broke apart Belarus adopted their old flag which was White, Red, and White. However, once Lukashenko came to power he changed the flag back. In fact there are tons of activists in Belarus that oppose Lukashnko and his dictatorship and want to bring our old flag back, which is part of our history. One such person is Sergei Kovalenko (Сергей Коваленко).

On Jan 7th 2010, in Vitebsk on square of Victory in Belarus, he climbed 35 meter (over 100 feet) Christmas tree and hung the old Belorussian flag above the old soviet-looking star. This is just one way that people are trying to fight Lukashenko’s dictatorship. Here are some pictures!

Sergei was arrested, beaten, and interrogated for 3 days. He is facing up to 6 years in jail. If you know how to read in Russian .. enjoy this story here http://charter97.org/ru/news/2010/1/12/25305/
