Olympic men’s hockey is underway and so far the games have more or less turned out as expected. Maybe we thought Usa would have had a bigger lead, maybe we thought Canada wouldn’t have been held scoreless for the entire first period, maybe we thought Russia would post a shutout. At the end of the day we are left with the results of Usa, Canada and Russia posting their first W’s. Today’s victories went to Sweden (2-0 over Germany), Finland (5-1 over Belarus) and the Czech Republic (3-1 over Slovakia).
So far Crosby is on the top of the Guins Olympic points scoreboard with 3 ass. Geno is right behind him, recording 1 goal and 1 ass.
We are definitely being spoiled with all this hockey!!
If you have the opportunity to purchase Olympic hockey tickets, it’s an experience you CANT pass up!! The atmosphere at the rink is nothing short of incredible. I had the honor of attending the Russia- Latvia game last night and the spirit that filled the building was enough to give you goose bumps. I took part in the most intense arena wide “wave” I have ever witnessed.
As I was snapping some shots of the pre-game warm up, I noticed a man on the screen of my camera who I instantly recognised as Vladimir Malkin. I called out “MR MALKIN!!” and waved him over to my suite. He came over and absolutely beamed when he saw the Russian sign a friend of mine helped me put together.
The stories are true, the Malkins are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Mr. Malkin stood and chatted with me as best he could (although many of my questions were just answered with him flashing that gold toothed grill of his and laughter). He pointed out his son Denis and wife Natalia for me. During the intermission I spent some time with them in the concourse while Denis mowed down on his hotdog.
Mrs. Malkin has the bladder of a champ and never left her seat. I’m a little jealous of her mad skills.
**Take note: if you are going to a game, or almost any other Olympic venue, either have a fully equipped visa card on you or tons of cash. I found out the hard way when I discovered they replaced all the atm machines in gm place with visa debit machines due to Olympic sponsorships. Luckily I was surrounded by some amazing Russians who helped me cover my massive alcohol bill. It turns out Russia likes to party late and I paid them back with shots at the bar. Great people. Great drinks.
