5 Holes and Devirginization..

January 10th, 2010 by ShutYour5Hole

Now that i have your attention…

After a long week of ups and downs, good news/bad news, city adventures and exploration, zoning out while looking at the mountains and missing my bus transfers, I FINALLY managed to get settled into my new home in Vancity and secure a ticket to the Pens-Canucks game this Saturday.. Jan 16th will round off the final game in our road trip.

We started this 5 game stand with a bang against the Leafs. Billy G took first goal honors after Crosby threw the puck into the slot where it deflected off of Guerin and through the 5 hole of Gustavsson, who was otherwise very solid in the early portion of the game. Leafs scored late in the first on a one timer by a wide open Stajan, which sent us into the first intermission at a 1-1 tie. About half way into the second period a series of events unfolded that essentially broke Gustavsson and provided the turn of the tide we’d been waiting for.

Gonchar still had to serve the penalty he was initially dealt, but he didn’t waste any time in making up for it.

And with that “the Monster” had been slain…

Fleury was back on top of his game and stopped 42 of the 43 shots he faced, one of which Phil Kessel will certainly never forget.

And of course it just wouldn’t be a pens game without Sid doing something awesome..

This is why you NEVER give up on the play, even if you don’t have the strongest positioning for follow through.

Final Score: Pens 4, Leafs 1..
The future is unwritten, and we cant be 100% certain what the results will be between now and Saturday.

But, one thing’s for sure, the pens know how to start a road trip in style..

The fan base is Pittsburgh is nothing short of incredible…
Images like this…

…never fail to give me goosebumps.

But, there is something equally powerful to be seen here:

There’s a lot to be said for dedicated pens supporters on the road..
We take a lot of abuse and are subject to near deafening amounts of chirping on a constant basis…
We are out-numbered and out of home territory. Above all, we are out of our minds with passion for our team.
We hold our heads just as high and cheer just as loud.
We refuse to hide our colours or who we are, but rather flaunt them with unrelenting pride.

Fans on the road matter.
Especially when you consider away games make up for half of the season. The boys take notice and greatly appreciate the support.
I guess that’s what makes Guins fans #1 against all other fan bases in the NHL.

Thursday night marked the date of my GM Place devirginization.

I had the opportunity to scope out our future battle ground, while witnessing a Burrows hat trick, a Luongo shutout and drinking copious amounts of beer in the process…

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. It’s called gaining the inside edge…

I have exactly one week to organize and master a successful plan of attack worthy of ‘Malkin’s Malitia’…

Wish me luck..

Until then,

Scream loud, scream proud.
